Virgin Media rival Eir had the rights to Europa League matches.

The way in which Champions League and Europa League football is broadcast in Ireland could be set for a big change after Virgin Media and TV3 announced that they have secured the rights to over 300 games for the next three seasons, but did not reveal how they would broadcast them. A spokeswoman for TV3 declined to comment on how the extra matches will be shown.

From next season, the Champions League group stage format will change with 6pm and 8pm games on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

Even though the shows will begin with Atlético Madrid taking on Olympique Marseille, the big attraction will be the Liverpool v Real Madrid Champions League showdown on 26 April.

BT Sport subscribers will also be able to enjoy 360 highlights on the app throughout the game.

Both matches will be available for free to watch on YouTube in 4K Ultra HD at, the BT Sport app and and available for BTTV subscribers on BT Sport 2 and BT Sport 4K UHD.

BT Sport hold the broadcasting rights to the Champions League in the UK.

The final UEFA Champions League match between English football club Liverpool and Spain's Real Madrid is to be shown free by United Kingdom broadband ISP BT via YouTube, the BTSport TV app and other mediums.
