Multiple People Killed in Crash Between School Bus, Dump Truck

The school bus and dump truck collided on I-80, west of exit 25 in Mount Olive, New Jersey, NJ.com reported.

Officials say the additional buses that were traveling with students to Waterloo Village were returned to the school and each student has been reunited with his or her parents.

Another parent, Kathy Lafaso said, "It's a disgusting scene", adding she would not let her child go on any more field trips.

"I can only describe it as horrific", said Mount Olive Mayor Robert Greenbaum.

Zainab Qureshi, 11, told The Record she was on one of the two buses not involved in the crash. The dump truck seemed to be mostly intact, images from the crash scene showed.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 118 people on school buses were killed in crashes from 2007-2016, the past year for which data is available.

New Jersey State Police tweeted the law enforcement agency was investigating a "serious" motor vehicle accident involving a school bus and dump truck. Morristown Medical Center and Hackettstown also received patients, though it wasn't clear how many.

The body of the bus came completely off its chassis and was resting on its side in the highway median.

Donald Lazorchek, who was picking up his son James, said the news was "shocking, very shocking", and he kept "hoping it wasn't my son".

The Paramus school district said in a statement that the students were headed to the Waterloo Village historic site about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from the East Brook Middle School.

A state prosecutor confirmed "fatalities", after the crash, in which 43 others were injured.

"Family members are asked to visit East Brook Middle School to await more information from school officials". Two people have suffered life-threatening injuries but the extent of the others is not known.

Phone lines at the middle school appeared to be tied up after the crash, and HuffPost was not able to get through.

The collision between the bus and dump truck caused the school bus to rip apart, tearing off the front end and undercarriage.
