New Yorkers speak to 'Yanny or Laurel' debate

New Yorkers speak to 'Yanny or Laurel' debate

So congratulations, #TeamLaurel. LOLz, did you really think Chrissy Teigen was wrong??

"Yanny or Laurel" took the internet by storm after a Reddit user posted the short clip of a word being read out loud, asking fellow Reddit users a simple question: What do you hear?

Quite honestly, it's strangely similar to the black and blue or gold and white dress debate that took over our news feeds a few years back.

As if we needed another thing to divide America.

For many people, the ears hear one at first before adjusting to the frequency and hearing the other. Although the words may sound completely different to you, the acoustics of the word are quite the same.

Sorry Yanny fans, but the original recording from Vocabulary.com is listed as the pronunciation for the word "Laurel". "When somebody hears the "L" in Laurel, they hear something different".

RNZ Auckland staffers unanimously heard "Yanny" in the clip, however further investigations showed it was possible to hear both words depending on the type of headphones worn. It's like it was put on the internet just to sow discord. It can also be the psychological properties of our hearing system. If you filter out the low frequencies, then you hear "yanny", said Almor. You might actually hear sounds differently than the person next to you.
