North Carolina: Teachers 'Raleigh' for Salary Increase

North Carolina: Teachers 'Raleigh' for Salary Increase

Teachers aren't allowed to collectively bargain or strike under state law, although organizers with the N.C. Association of Educators (NCAE) describe Wednesday's protest as a one-day rally, with a focus on the November legislative elections. But teachers say it's time the state increases per-pupil funding to the national average and raises teacher pay.

But that doesn't mean the fight will end Wednesday. In North Carolina, the General Assembly sets a base pay scale in its biennial budget.

So there's your North Carolina snapshot.

During the press conference where the decision was announced, she said it would be a work day for all district personnel but with after-school athletics, Advanced Placement testing and school lunches at select sites.

"We are extremely aware that disrupting family routines puts a burden on parents".

Camden County Schools Superintendent Joe Ferrell likewise said Camden has only one teacher who's requested any type of leave on Wednesday.

The legislature comes to Raleigh on Wednesday for the "short session" and opening day promises to be far more exciting than most years.

"I want you to see what the people who are educating your children are being paid".

It depends on whom you ask.

Tomorrow, we are shipping out to North Carolina, where teachers are preparing to walkout for at least one-day on May 16th to mark the beginning of the North Carolina General Assembly.

They've had some salary increases in recent years, but when adjusted for inflation, they've lost 9.4% in pay since 2009. When we say more in North Carolina, we're talking the bare necessities.

We find it hard to blame the teachers, who have been peaceably complaining through proper channels for years. He says it will take around 10 years to get the state up to the national average teacher pay.

Tammy Sawyer, a spokeswoman for the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools, indicated a few teachers from the district are planning to attend the rally, but ECPPS officials aren't expecting any disruption to the school day.

But funding for both are on the rise.

By canceling classes on Wednesday, those 38 school districts aren't requiring teachers to pay the $50 fee.

Walker hopes after the march lawmakers will give more money to increase teacher pay, but also help educate students.

"So many people, they tell us over and over again it's a hard job", Walker said. To our colleagues in public charter schools across North Carolina, we call on you to join us May 16 and beyond to strengthen our public schools and to demand policies that grant every student in North Carolina access to a world-class education.

It's estimated that 2,000 teachers from the greater-Charlotte area plan to go to Raleigh.

"This plan must include restoration of compensation for advanced degrees and longevity", the state teachers group said.
