Payet says he is fit to play in Europa League final

Atletico have one more fixture this season, however, with Marseille awaiting in the Europa League final at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais on Wednesday night.

But Rudi Garcia's Marseille have caught Simeone's eye on their run to a first continental final in 14 years. We are similar teams so I think it will be a tense and high-pressured game.

And even if coach Diego Simeone insisted his focus was like that of a racehorse - "head forward, I don't see or hear anything but the final" - it is impossible to ignore the noise surrounding the Frenchman.

One thing Marseille do have on their side is experience, with Thauvin and Payet having played in the Premier League while Luiz Gustavo and Adil Rami also have plenty of big matches under their belts. But there's also Diego Costa, Kevin [Gameiro] and Fernando Torres, who could come on at some point.

"This year we're celebrating the 25th anniversary of being the first French side to win the Champions League", Garcia said in his pre-match press conference on Tuesday. "As we approach the game, the emotions rise and rise", Simeone said. "For a player, when Barca want you, it makes you feel important, but he knows that he is important for us and that we want him here".

"They have very few vulnerabilities, to be honest, there won't be many gaps as they defend as a block, and the game is going to be about being fast and efficient in small spaces but we have the qualities to get through that defence", Payet added. Simeone was charged with insulting a match official and improper conduct.

But while the Argentine will be forced to watch on from the stands, his fiery assistant, German "Mono" Burgos, will take charge of the team. Simeone went as far as to say their understanding is close to telepathic.

"We've known each other for almost all our lives, we have the same vision of football so whatever I'm thinking, he is thinking the same".

The Los Rojiblancos however, have not beaten a French club in France since September 1961, when they won 3-2 at Sedan in the first round of their triumphant European Cup Winners' Cup campaign.

Marseille failed to win in their last Ligue 1 game as they played a 3-3 draw with Guingamp which dealt a blow to their chase of finishing in the second place to qualify for the Champions League.
