Santa Fe teachers return for 1st time since massacre

Abbott, a Republican, focused the first of three "roundtable sessions" on school safety.

On Monday, 15-year-old Santa Fe student Tessa Ybarra stood at a memorial for the shooting victims. He said he wants to apologize to his sisters.

Among the measures coming out of the meeting that Abbott said he would like to see implemented quickly were expanding school safety training programs, bolstering threat assessment systems and expanding a pilot program created to screen for students who might be a threat to themselves or others.

The Texas Tribune thanks its sponsors. But critics say Texas isn't serious about changing its gun-loving culture.

Take a look at these other school shootings below. "We came up with some very solid solutions", Abbott told reporters.

Attendees of Tuesday's discussion included leaders from the Texas House and Senate and the heads of the Texas Education Agency and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The students who survived the Parkland shooting weren't too young that they could be dismissed as being told what to say by adults (although that happened) or too old that they could be accused of having a political agenda (although that happened too). For too long, too many American adults were willing to sacrifice children and as a result, children have grown accustomed to a reality in which they develop a mindset that they have to march for their lives in the name of school safety and, if necessary, sacrifice their lives.

Leigh Wall, the superintendent of the district about 30 miles southeast of Houston, said in a letter to parents Tuesday that teachers and support staff will be working to prepare for the return of students next Tuesday. I've got questions. Is there a second review if you are in fact, mentally ill?

The May 19 front-page article " A fondness for trench coats and a growing darkness" reported that authorities said the two guns used by the alleged shooter in Texas belonged to his father.

Democrats have largely welcomed a discussion on gun violence but criticized the effectiveness of any changes now proposed by Republican leadership.

Iranian officials have vowed to stay on in Syria for as long as needed, setting the stage for a potential confrontation as Washington seeks to tighten the screws on Tehran following the US withdrawal from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal brokered with Iran under President Barack Obama and world powers. Former Dallas County Sherriff Lupe Valdez, who is favored to win Tuesday's Democratic gubernatorial runoff and face Abbott in November, has called for stricter background checks and closing of gun sale loopholes but was quick to add: "That doesn't mean I'm against guns". Texas Gun Sense, which advocates for further gun restrictions, is expected to attend Abbott's discussion Wednesday.
