Twitter urges all users to change passwords after glitch

(NYSE:TWTR) has urged its 336 million users to change their passwords after the company discovered a bug that stored passwords unencrypted in plain text in an internal system.

However, the company said it recently discovered a bug, and that the passwords were being stored unmasked in an internal log.

Well, Twitter says that the bug occurred through an issue in the hashing process, where it masks passwords by replacing them with a random string of characters that then get sorted on Twitter's system. "We have fixed the bug, and our investigation shows no indication of breach or misuse by anyone".

Phil Libin, a venture capitalist, told Live Mint: "Twitter's misstep is disturbing because there's no reason for companies to store user passwords in plain text, even in internal files".

In a statement, the company said, "We are very sorry this happened".

All three experts urged users to act on Twitter's advice and change their password. "As a precaution, consider changing your password on all services where you've used this password". "This is an industry standard".

The US Federal Trade Commission, which investigates companies accused of deceptive practices related to data security, declined comment on the password glitch.

The social media site said it found no sign that hackers accessed the exposed data, but advised users to change their passwords to be safe. And Lubsen notes some people use the same password for everything.

Parag Agrawal, Twitter's chief technology officer, wrote in a blog post: "We recognise and appreciate the trust you place in us, and are committed to earning that trust every day", the Guardian reported.

Mr Cluley said enabling two-factor authentication that adds another ID check to login attempts would help "harden" accounts.
