In both cases, toppling trees fell and damaged overhead Metro wiring, an official spokesman said. However, services resumed after a while. This thunderstorm will continue for the next 48 to 72 hours, said Charan Singh, Scientist, Indian Meteorological Department on weather change.

Thunderstorm accompanied with squall is very likely in parts of the state between 8.30 am tomorrow and 8.30 am the day after, it said.




K Sathi Devi, the head of the National Weather Forecasting Centre, said two western disturbances had led to the inclement weather.

Dark storm clouds gathered over the capital, battering the city with high winds. Flights from Tokyo, Newark and Colombo were diverted to other airports, people familiar with the matter said. Motorists switched on headlights to find their way in the enveloping darkness.

A new wave of violent sand and thunder storms hit northern India on Sunday killing more than 40 people and leaving widespread disruption, authorities said.

The dramatic change in weather, however, did bring respite to residents from the sweltering heat. A depression extending from Haryana to Nagaland which might result in dust storm and thundershowers at Punjab, Haryana, West Uttar Pradesh and few parts of North Rajasthan.

Thunderstorm over the hill states is due to a new western disturbance that is likely to start from Sunday.
