Whole Foods comes under fire for partnership with Yellow Fever eatery

Whole Foods comes under fire for partnership with Yellow Fever eatery

"We were anxious about a strike at first", she told the website Next Shark last fall.

Yellow fever is also the name of a mosquito-borne viral infection common in areas of Africa and South America.

The term implies "an attraction or affinity of Asian people or Asian things", such as Korean pop music or karaoke, she said.

Some people on social media defended the news of the partnership with Whole Foods as part of a broader cultural trend.

Whole Foods can be a divisive chain among shoppers.

Whole Foods declined to comment in response to HuffPost's request for comment.

The restaurant specializes in bowls that combine rice, noodles or greens with meats, vegetables and toppings. Some believe that the store caters to an affluent white demographic and that integrating Yellow Fever Restaurant into their brand legitimizes the use of a potentially racist and sexist term. Yes, the name definitely gets your attention.

Though not necessarily more harmful than the disease its named for, "yellow fever" is also a term that perpetuates stereotypes against the Asian community.

In previous media interviews, Kim has acknowledged the potential for negative reactions to the name. "Once, I had a friend who was grabbing our food for lunch and her White friend wasn't sure if he was allowed to eat here".

However, her explanation hasn't gone over well with everyone on social media.

The Southern California-based operator of an Asian fast-casual build-your-own-bowl concept was rocketed onto the national stage with the opening of its third location in a Whole Foods Market last week. Columbia University professor and author Marie Myung-Ok Lee, wrote on Twitter.

While some saw the name as racist, others noted association of the deadly disease that ravages poor nations.

Kim told NextShark that she wanted her restaurant to be the Asian version of Chipotle. It refers to the sexual fascination some white men have for Asian women.

Whole Foods is owned by Amazon. "Gross", one person wrote. The name has been tagged as racist, but the owner said it is a fusion of culture and food.

Kim has shrugged off concerns about the name in the past, suggesting her quiet, local success may have helped avoid a spotlight on the name.

Kim explained that the idea of a fusion of Asian cuisines stems from her childhood memory of different kinds of food for Thanksgiving.

Asian-American women's identity is often intensified. That makes a controversy all the more frustrating, she said.

Overall, she said she felt "pretty comfortable" with the fact that Whole Foods 'knew what we were all about'. "Now all of a sudden people are bashing on us", she said.

Yelp reviews suggest that, regardless of people's opinion on the name, customers find the food to be quite good. "First off, change the name".
