Almost a million vehicles caught in Mercedes-Benz's emissions scandal

The Mercedes-Benz star is displayed on the front of a Mercedes-Benz vehicle at the annual news conference of German auto giant Daimler AG in Stuttgart, southwestern Germany, on February 1, 2018.

Daimler said it would refit the software but denied any wrongdoing.

Daimler said last month it would appeal against an order by the KBA to recall the Mercedes van Vito 1.6l Diesel Euro 6 model, following a transport ministry investigation.

Germany's Transport Ministry said on Monday that 774,000 Mercedes-Benz vehicles in Europe had been found to contain unauthorised software defeat devices and ordered Daimler to recall more than 200,000 cars in Germany. The diesel Mercedes C-Class C220d and GLC 220d, as well as the Vito 119CDI, are said to be affected, with German authorities demanding the recall after "illegal switch-off devices" were detected.

"Daimler [Mercedes-Benz's parent company] says the applications in the motor control software the federal government has found fault with will be removed at the greatest possible speed and in cooperative transparency with the authorities".

Since rival Volkswagen admitted in 2015 to cheating U.S. emissions tests, German automakers including Daimler and BMW have faced a backlash against diesel technology in which they have invested billions of euros.

The ordered recall follows Daimler's decision to voluntarily recall three million vehicles in the European Union a year ago to perform software updates and improve emissions performance.

It is not the first time Daimler has faced problems with its emissions software.

In a statement posted on Twitter, the company said: "Daimler confirms the recall".

The reports allege that two engines (OM 642 and OM 651) come with devices that shut down emissions controls under certain situations. "Open legal questions will be clarified in the objection proceedings".

"We don't see any evidence that Daimler was designing software to deliberately cheat on emission testing", he said.

According to specialist Arndt Ellinghorst, an analyst with Evercore ISI in London, the recall will cost the automaker less than $120 million.
