ARCTIC BLAST: Trump SLAMS Canada’s Trudeau Over G7 Comments

ARCTIC BLAST: Trump SLAMS Canada’s Trudeau Over G7 Comments

Larry Kudlow, director of the National Economic Council, lashed out at Trudeau as "amateurish" and "sophomoric".

"Canadians are polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around", said Trudeau.

In the end, Trump never visited the sessions on climate or the ocean, but held its own news conference, where he slammed "unfair trade" and promised to cut ties with countries that didn't adhere to a "zero tariffs", policy, then leaving for a summit in Singapore. "Not fair to the PEOPLE of America!" he tweeted. He was asked why he was jeopardizing relations with long-standing allies like Canada while welcoming a historical USA enemy with open arms as a friend.

Neither of them have grounds to present themselves as purist defenders of free trade. Peter Navarro, Trump's top trade adviser, said, "There's a special place in hell for any foreign leader that engages in bad-faith diplomacy with President Donald J. Trump". For instance, Trump's steel and aluminum tariffs are expected to cause a drag on USA economic growth and result in a net loss of American jobs.

Liberal MP and former dairy farmer Wayne Easter said there was a real sense of panic building in his P.E.I. riding over the implications of Trump's pronouncements following his departure from the G7 gathering.

"I get into Air Force One, the television's on, and I see a news conference being given by the prime minister of Canada", Trump said.

"What I saw Prime Minister Trudeau say was, I thought, fairly benign and certainly didn't warrant any attack". However instead due to President Trumps harsh remarks this uncalled for clash started. Kudlow was referring to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

With politicians on both sides of the House supporting retaliation against penalties on Canadian steel and aluminum, John Ries, a professor with UBC's Sauder School of Business, says that might lead to US President Donald Trump backing off.

"I know it didn't look friendly", Trump said.

People close to the situation said they were disappointed the outreach had not been as productive as they hoped.

Speaking for the first time about the acrimonious conclusion of the Group of Seven meeting in Quebec over the weekend, Trump said he felt Trudeau had mischaracterized the USA position in a press conference after the summit. "I don't understand the obsession with trade relations with Canada", he said, given that Canada is the biggest single buyer of American goods and services in the world.

Sometimes described as a "mini-Obama", not least due to his omnipresent smile, Trudeau is clearly far closer in his political alignments to the US Democratic Party than Trump's Republicans.

One particular source of his ire recently has been Canada's supply management system, which levels tariffs of up to 300 per cent on imported dairy products.
