Behind Trump's G-7 Exasperation

Behind Trump's G-7 Exasperation

President Donald Trump's chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow and his trade adviser Peter Navarro blasted Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Sunday for "betraying" the United States and engaging in "bad faith diplomacy" at this week's fractious G7 summit.

Without any resolution, Trudeau has promised to impose retaliatory tariffs on metals and a range of other U.S. products by Canada Day.

The Prime Minister simply stated that the recently imposed tariffs on Canadian aluminum and steel were "insulting" (in reaction to Trump's previous statement that 'Canada posed a national security threat to the U.S.') and Canada would continue to stand up for itself against Trump's unfair agenda.

Mr Trump attacked North Atlantic Treaty Organisation as "obsolete and disproportionately too expensive" during the presidential campaign and returned to the theme after the G7 summit in Canada.

While the agreement of legislators who are normally opposed on most fronts was remarkable, the anger also spread to pundits, officials, celebrities and ordinary citizens as Canadians vowed consumer boycotts of American goods and brainstormed insults of Trump on social media. "We don't think that that is a useful or productive way to do business", she said.

Not all USA officials have joined Messrs.

Trudeau said he had reiterated to Trump, who left the G-7 meeting before it ended, that tariffs would harm industries and workers on both sides of the U.S.

Ahead of the summit, Trudeau said "we will always defend our supply management system".

Trump's twitter fingers continued their tirade on Monday, when he threw low-key shade by calling Canada "enemies".

The relationship between the US and its allies was already off-balance after Mr. Trump just a week before the summit imposed 25% tariffs on steel and 10% tariffs on aluminum from the European Union and Canada.

The escalating clash over trade between Washington and some of its closest global partners, including Canada, came as Trump arrived in Singapore for a crucial summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

Bruce Heyman, the former U.S. Ambassador to Canada, on Monday slammed Donald Trump's treatment of Justin Trudeau, and Canada in general, demanding the president apologize for his surrogate's claim there's a "special place in hell" for people like the Canadian prime minister. You know, the way they say that you know if you're going to like somebody in the first five seconds?

Mr Kudlow suggested Mr Trump saw Mr Trudeau as trying to weaken his hand before that meeting, saying the president will not "let a Canadian prime minister push him around ..."

After the conclusion of the summit, Trump again said he would not allow other countries to impose barriers on the United States.

He added: "That's what weak, dishonest Justin Trudeau did and that comes right from Air Force One".

He is urging USA officials to focus on unfair trade practices, like steel dumping by China.

The president has questioned privately why he should attend the G7 at all, according to a person familiar with the conversations, but was advised that skipping the meeting would appear as though he's backing down.
