David Spade Donates $100,000 for Mental Health in Honor of Sister-in-Law Kate

Amanda Bradley is the senior program director for COPES, their telephone and mobile service that responds to people experiencing emergencies, including suicidal thoughts. That's why I thought it was attractive and touching when our fellow Inc.com columnist Dave Kerpen - also a serial entrepreneur and a best-selling author - wrote a compelling and vulnerable article about why it's past time for us to work to destigmatize depression (the article that inspired this conversation can be found here). Don't delay in getting someone you love help.

David's donation comes after his brother, Andy, the husband of the 55-year-old designer, whose death was ruled as suicide by hanging last week, paid a heartbreaking tribute to his former partner.

The hospital's annual meeting is also an opportunity to celebrate accomplishments of the past year and offer a heartfelt thank you to staff and volunteers, as well as the many partners, donors and community members dedicated to reducing stigma associated with mental illness.

Dr Rayner said: “In Bermuda, completed suicide does not appear to be as common as in other jurisdictions.”.

Nevada is the only state in the nation to see a decrease in suicide rates, with 1 percent fewer deaths by suicide from 1999 to 2016. "A traumatic event is a strong data point, any significant life event that the person is presenting saying they are baffled and are running out of solutions to their problems". She wrote, "To the outside world, they seemed "happy". Extreme signs include talking about wanting to die or even making plans for suicide. It gives them the opportunity to say, ‘Yes. The group's research also shows that between 50 percent and 75 percent of suicide victims talk about their emotions prior to the act.

"Kate was the most handsome woman in the world", Andy Spade told the New York Times "She was the kindest person I've ever known and my best friend for 35 years".

“It invariably leads to more discussions about suicide, not just in Bermuda but around the world.”. She could make me laugh so hard. And when "more and more people are exposed to suicide. the awareness of it becomes its own empowerment", Walker said. I still can't believe it.

As staggering as these numbers are, what needs to be shouted from the rooftops is that help is always available to those who seek it. You can walk into the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute for immediate attention Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm. The national suicide-prevention hotline, which has helped more than 6m people since it started in 2005, has also been funded with the same $7m a year for the past five years.
