That's why when the Detroit Pistons showed interest in the 61-year-old Casey filling their coaching void left by the parting of Stan Van Gundy, he was intrigued.

Casey, 61, led the Raptors to a franchise record 59 wins this seaso, and was sacked days after Toronto was swept by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the conference semifinals. "He embodies our culture and will be a great representative for our franchise". He was 320-238 in seven seasons and is Toronto's winningest coach.

Casey, 61, has served as a head coach, associate head coach or assistant coach in the National Basketball Association for 23 of the past 24 years.

"I'm confident that this team has the pieces in place to compete at a very high level", Mr. Casey added.

Under Casey, the Raptors won four Atlantic Division titles and advanced to the playoffs in five consecutive seasons.

The Pistons recently hired the former Nets general manager Ed Stefanski to lead their search for new front-office executives. Casey also coached the Timberwolves from 2005-07, where he amassed a 53-69 record.

Detroit has missed the playoffs in eight of the last nine seasons. He and his wife, Brenda, have a daughter, Justine and a son, Zachary.
