Doctor suspended for berating basketball player suffering from anxiety attack

Doctor suspended for berating basketball player suffering from anxiety attack

A California doctor who thought it was amusing to mock an ER patient has sparked outrage after video cursing out a man in distress goes viral. He takes Klonopin, which can be used to treat seizures, panic disorder, and anxiety, but hadn't taken any in the days before his attack, according to the news outlet.

In the South Bay, 20-year-old Samuel Bardwell suffered from what he believes was an extreme anxiety attack Monday night during basketball practice at West Valley College in Saratoga. The young man's father, Donald Bardwell, posted the video on Facebook on Tuesday, where it appears that Keegstra was mocking both father and son, and referring to Samuel as the "least sick of all the people who are here who are dying".

"She said, "I know why you people are here, you people who come here for drugs, ' and I said, 'What do you mean you people?'" Donald said".

After waiting three hours, Dr.Beth Keegstra showed up at Samuel's room with a security guard.

"You're full of sh*t!" she told Bardwell, as he tried to explain his condition.

Efforts by ABC News to reach Keegsta for comment were not immediately successful.

"This week, a patient who visited the emergency department at our Los Gatos campus had an interaction with a physician whose demeanor was unprofessional and not the standard we require of all who provide care through El Camino Hospital", the hospital said.

An employee of Vituity, a company that staffs the hospital's ER doctors, said in a statement the physician has also been removed from the schedules of all the hospitals at which she works.

"On top of that, the hospital needs to be investigated", Samuel Bardwell told CBS in San Francisco.

"Sit up!" she yells twice as she's spotted pulling the patient by the arm.

The video has led to social media commentators overwhelmingly take the view Keegstra was derogatory towards Bardwell, while others wondered if the ER's behavior was endemic of her treatment towards all patients or skewed against black ones.... "Now don't try to tell me you can't move".

After a bit of back-and-forth, Dr. Keegstra can be heard asking Samuel whether he was faking his anxiety attack to get narcotics.

"We didn't know what the outcome of not taking the meds would be", said Bardwell's father, Donald.

A day later, the hospital added an update, saying it has notified its contracted provider to permanently remove Keegstra from the list of approved physicians at all its hospitals.

In a statement, El Camino Hospital said it's taking the matter "very seriously" and has since apologized to Bardwell and his son. I'm just so confused of why somebody would treat me like that, Bardwell said.

"He can't inhale!" Keegstra said.

Samuel's father attempts to step in, telling Dr. Keegstra that his son's breathing is labored.

Told Bardwell's father via ABC News, 'In my mind, I don't think she should be practicing medicine at all'.
