Dustin Johnson reclaims No. 1 ranking with St. Jude win

Dustin Johnson reclaims No. 1 ranking with St. Jude win

Johnson shot 7-under 63 for his lowest round this year and grabbed a one-stroke lead Friday after 36 holes at the St. Jude Classic.

Johnson has been dominant in multiple aspects of his game this season.

"I feel like I'm playing really well", Johnson said.

"I mean winning this week, I think is bigger confidence booster than being number one in the world", Johnson added.

Johnson won his first major title at the 2016 U.S. Open and was a runaway world number one heading into last April's Masters, only to bruise his back when he fell down stairs on tournament eve.

Johnson will be among the favourites to win the U.S. Open starting on Thursday at the Shinnecock Hills Golf Course in NY and he is confident of repeating his 2016 victory in the year's second major.

NOTES: Johnson was the first on tour to win by holing out from off the green since Jordan Spieth at the 2017 Travelers Championship.

Preparing for the US Open, which he won in 2016, Johnson cruised to victory in Tennessee and heads to Shinnecock Hills after stringing together rounds of 67, 63 and 65 before wrapping up a final 18 holes that felt nearly like a practice round, with the only question remaining how low Johnson would go. Snedeker turned in a bogey-free round with eight birdies needing only 22 putts. "If I can get a good read and good speed, they're going to go in". Now he will play in the last group on the final day for the first time on the PGA Tour with Johnson.

"I just want to win", Johnson said.

"It was a very good decision for me to come here and play and keep my game really sharp", he said.

Johnson finished with a flourish when his 171-yard second shot on the par-four 18th found the bottom of the cup, sending the crowd at the TPC Southwind in Memphis into a frenzy on a sweltering day.

Yokomine, the victor of 23 events on the Japan LPGA Tour, flirted with a 59 but parred the par-5 18th for a 61 to tie the course record.

Blaum redeemed a bogey at the first with seven birdies in a 64 and Putnam matched that effort as both seek a first win on the PGA Tour. And from that moment on, Johnson's second title of 2018 was never in doubt.
