FOMC raises the target for Fed funds rate by 25bp to 1

However quarterly economic forecasts show central bankers now expect the rate to end the year at 2.4%, rather than the 2.1% projected in March.

Fed Chairman Jerome Powell is scheduled to hold a press conference at 2:30 p.m. EDT (1830 GMT).

So-called core inflation - which excludes volatile items like energy and housing - is now 2.2 percent, around the level the Fed is looking for. The rate is estimated to fall 3.5% next year, through to 2020, down from the previous forecast of 3.6%. The most immediately affected will be credit-card interest rates, which are subject to near-instantaneous revision to track the federal funds rate.

The median average of the central bank's updated forecasts - also referred to as the "dot plots" - called for interest rates to end the year around at 2.4%, up from March's projection of 2.1%; The forecasts suggest the Fed will raise interest rates two more times this year. That reflects the fact that the USA recovery after the crisis has been stronger, and inflation is getting closer to the Fed's target. It also forecast an even lower unemployment rate of 3.5% for 2019 and 2020. The step was needed, the Fed said, to be sure rates stay within the intended boundaries.

USA unemployment is already at 3.8 per cent, the lowest since 2000, and the Fed believes it will fall to 3.6 per cent by the end of the year, which would be the best rate since the 1960s. The projections show inflation rising 2.1% for the next three years. While a few said the curve had become "a less reliable signal" of future activity, several stressed the link between inversions and coming economic downturns.

The unemployment rate is 3.8%, the lowest since 2000 and tied for the lowest reading since 1969.

The Fed aims to achieve its mandates of maximizing employment and stabilizing prices by lowering rates to spur growth during times of economic weakness and raising rates to slow growth if the economy threatens to overheat.

While many economists think the current expansion will exceed the 1990's streak, some worry about what might occur once the impact of the tax cuts begin to fade and the Fed's gradual rate hikes begin to curb growth.

A global trade war would risk cutting into USA economic growth by depressing American export sales and raising inflation by making consumers and businesses pay more for imports.

The increase marks the highest level of interest rates in the United States since 2008.

The Fed's meeting this week is to be followed by policy meetings of two other major central banks - the European Central Bank on Thursday and the Bank of Japan on Friday.
