G7 row: Emmanuel Macron attacks Donald Trump's 'fits of anger'

Trump on June 9 tweeted that based on "false statements" by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who hosted a G7 summit in Quebec, he had instructed US representatives not to endorse the final communique, which the Canadian leader had said was agreed to by all G7 nations.

Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain put it this way: "This is the antithesis of so-called "principled realism" and a sure path to diminishing America's leadership in the world".

US President Donald Trump has planned to leave the summit of the Group of Seven wealthy nations before it discusses climate change and the health of oceans, underlining fractures in the G7 exacerbated by US trade tariffs.

Trump came out swinging in his news conference, repeating his view that America has always been cheated by its friends. "As the president said, reduce these barriers, in fact go to zero, zero tariffs, zero non-tariff barriers, zero subsidies, and along the way we're going to have to clean up the global trading system".

"I highlighted directly to the president that... it's kind of insulting, and I highlighted that it was not helping in our renegotiation of NAFTA, and that it would be with regret, but it would be with absolute certainty and firmness that we move forward with retaliatory measures on July 1", Trudeau said at the press conference following the summit.

His comments were reported by CTV. France's President, Emmanuel Macron, had tweeted a blunt warning that "the American President may not mind being isolated, but neither do we mind signing a 6 country agreement if need be".

Mr Trump and G7 leaders had a bitter exchange over trade tariffs, ratcheting tensions at the summit.

The two-day summit in Canada has been marred by fears of a trade war and tit-for-tat exchanges of hostile tweets, with USA trading partners furious over Mr Trump's decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from Canada, the European Union and Mexico as part of his "America First" agenda.

Emmanuel Macron has warned Donald Trump about "fits of anger" after the U.S. president refused to endorse a joint communique of G7 leaders.

"We can't have an example where we're paying, the United States is paying, 270% - just can't have it - and when they send things into us you don't have that", Trump said at the press conference. "And it's going to stop. But we're getting them worked out, slowly but surely".

He also said he would know in "the first minute" whether North Korea was serious based on his "touch" and his "feel".

Trump had come to Quebec insisting on his long-standing claim that America has been exploited for too long by existing trade arrangements - and he was met by counterparts equally determined to protect the "rules-based" worldwide system.

"Crimea was let go during the Obama administration and, you know, Obama can say all he wants, but he allowed Russian Federation to take Crimea", Trump said. Trudeau rejected the idea.

A German government official said the plan would see direct talks between the European Union and the United States start straight away, and last around two weeks, focused on how much, or whether, European Union trade policy endangers USA national security interests.

Officials say Canada and Mexico have proposed member nations gather every five years to review the treaty.

There was also an agreement to disagree on climate change in the wake of Trump's decision to leave the Paris climate accord past year which further underlined the divide between the Group of Seven's powerhouse and its six co-members. He called many current tariffs on USA goods and services "ridiculous".
