How to get help for someone who might be suicidal

How to get help for someone who might be suicidal

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the country, according to the report.

The CDC reports a almost 30 percent rise in suicides across the country since 1999. In the US, to nobody's surprise, firearms are the most commonly used method, accounting for 41 percent of suicides of people with known mental-health conditions, and 55 percent of those without, according to the CDC report.

More than half of suicides in 2015 in a subgroup of 27 states were among people with no known mental health condition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found. Suicide is rarely caused by any single factor, health officials said, but information from coroners' reports suggest numerous deaths followed relationship problems, substance use and financial crises. Indeed, the report found that more than half of people who died by suicide did not have a diagnosed mental health condition at the time of their death.

"We have to keep working on stigma", Zietlow-DeJesus said.

"Suicide is more than a mental health issue", Schuchat said.

"A lot of people, they feel like they know themselves well, or they feel like their loved ones know them very well, but sometimes there are things that are underlying that need to be straightened out", Dr. Anthony Quinn said. Many people don't want to talk about it, don't want to acknowledge a family member who's committed suicide, et cetera. Every state but Nevada saw its suicide rate rise over the past 15 years.

"People can live with suicidal thoughts for weeks, months, years and, you know, what are the triggering events that push them from living with thoughts to having a plan and then acting on that plan?" said George Austin with the Idaho Suicide Prevention Hotline.

The number of suicides during that period peaked in 2014, when the state saw 606 suicides, the CDC reported.

But the two deaths, along with stories about the rising suicide rate nationally, have led to increased attention to suicide and associated resources.

That means any public health effort to reduce suicides can't exclusively focus on those who have reached out for help. Asked whether that was a deliberate omission, because of the political climate surrounding gun control, Stone said that suicide rates have been increasing across all methods. "The widespread nature of the increase, in every state but one, really suggests that this is a national problem hitting most communities".

Experts say there is no single cause for suicide. They are part of a task force that work with patients, in the upstate, struggling with mental health problems.

Preventing suicide requires help from all sectors of society, the researchers said. "Someone who has had a suicide attempt, even if it's taking aspirin or a suicide attempt", he said.

"We have to get the whole community involved - not just the health care community", Dr Reed says.

In both countries, suicide prevention efforts are shifting toward meeting people's needs before they reach crisis.
