Hundreds of homes destroyed by volcano lava in Hawaii

Hundreds of homes destroyed by volcano lava in Hawaii

Kīlauea Volcano's current eruption centered in Leilani Estates on the Big Island of Hawai'i has destroyed almost 200 homes over the past day and a half.

Lava from the erupting Kilauea volcano destroyed "hundreds" of homes overnight, including a house belonging to the Big Island's mayor, according to a Hawaii County spokeswoman. No injuries were reported as most residents heeded the advice to leave.

About 500 homes in Kapoho Beach Lots and Vacationland were in the direct path of the lava, officials from the County of Hawaii Civil Defense told ABC News.

That's a lot of lava, but flow volumes can be extraordinarily hard to measure, the USGS said.

Vivian Mark, a resident of Hilo who owns a beachfront vacation rental in Vacationland and is president of the Vacationland Hawaii Community Association, said Vacationland consisted of 240 housing lots and almost 90 farm lots, but she was unsure how many of those had properties built on them.

With further expected loss of forest habitat and defoliation due to lava inundation and volcanic emissions, the remnant and sub-populations may no longer persist, rapidly decline or become further fragmented and/or contract in range, Steve Bergfeld said, the Hawaii island branch manager for the Department of Land and Natural Resources' Division of Forestry and Wildlife. One shelter was full Tuesday, officials said.

The latest two communities affected by the lava flow had been ordered evacuated beforehand and there were no immediate reports of any casualties.

"He was very depressed", Okabe said of how Kim, the mayor, felt about losing his vacation home. It was where vacationers enjoyed tide pools, snorkeling and picnics, reported CNN affiliate Hawaii News Now.

Thousands in the Puna area had to evacuate after the first fissure opened 3 May.

Homes in Kapoho Beach Lots and Vacationland are on smaller lots and are closer together than in other parts of the Puna district. "It's hard because obviously a lot of people have lost a lot more than just a lovely place to visit and memories".
