Idaho boy recovering from rare case of plague

The child is recovering, but no additional information on the youngster's conditions or identity was provided by the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare.

Christine Myron, a spokeswoman for the Central District Health Department, said Wednesday that the child, who has not been publicly identified, is back home in Elmore County, Idaho, and "doing well" after being treated with antibiotics in the hospital. The report says it's unclear if he picked up the disease in Idaho or during a recent vacation to Oregon. It also can be transmitted to people by direct contact with infected animals, including rodents, rabbits and pets.

A boy in the USA state of Idaho is recovering after contracting plague - the first human case in the state in more than two decades, health officials say. Eight cases of plague have occurred in OR since 1990 and two in Idaho. In the 14th century, almost two thirds of Europe's population was wiped out by the disease during the Black Death.

Figures from the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that between the years 1970 and 2012, the average number of plague cases reported in the country per year is just seven. Plague can cause serious illness and death if not quickly treated.

In fact, every single year, the authorities register several plague cases across the United States.

Plague has historically been found in wildlife in both states: it's rare in humans, and person-to-person transmission is extremely rare.

People can protect themselves when visiting plague-infested wildlife areas by wearing insect repellent, long trousers and socks.

Clean up areas near your home where rodents can live, such as woodpiles and lots with tall grasses and weeds. This strain of bacteria still occurs naturally in some rodent populations, spread by fleas in rats and squirrels, but is exceedingly rare in humans.

Keep pets from roaming and hunting ground squirrels or other rodents.

Take sick pets to the vet, especially if they were in contact with sick or dead rodents close to the desert areas south and east of Boise. Fever, chills, headaches and often a swelling of lymph nodes under the armpit, are some common symptoms. The last two cases in 1991 and 1992 did not result in death and the patients were able to fully recover.

Don't leave pet food and water where rodents can get to them. Cats with plague pneumonia can give it to people.
