Immune System drug shows 'spectacular' results for Prostate Cancer patients

A new study conducted by the Institute of cancer research and the Royal Marsden hospital in London has shown unbelievable results in patients with prostate cancer.

Professor Paul Workman, chief executive of the Institute of Cancer Research in London, said: "Immunotherapy has proven to be a smarter, kinder treatment for many types of cancer - but it still only works for a minority of patients".

Cancer Research UK said the next step was to predict who would respond. Pembrolizumab is a humanized antibody used in cancer immunotherapy.

The earlier trails conducted using immunotherapy in prostate cancer did not prove to be successful.

General, survival is sweet for the most cancers, with 84 per cent nonetheless alive 10 years after first analysis. One of them is Michael English (72), who found out he had cancer in 2005. The immunotherapy drug also stopped the tumor growth in 11 percent of patients.

"We were astonished when scans showed that the tumor had become undetectable".

"Today I'm effectively cancer-free".

The world's leading expert on prostate cancer Professor Johann de Bono from the Institute of cancer research said: "We hope for a revolutionary cure, but they can't call it". Black patients experienced higher rates of several hormonal-based toxicities, such as hyperglycemia, hypokalemia, and hot flashes, "suggesting perhaps a greater exposure risk to this medicine", George said.

Scores of men with the most lethal form of prostate cancer have been "brought back from the brink of death" by a drug found to work where all others have failed in a groundbreaking British-led trial.

This is an approach that will not help the majority of men. However, the researchers were expecting it, since immunotherapy only works for some patients.

The researchers from London think that patients that have heavily-mutated cancer respond better to immunotherapy.

Nell Barrie from Cancer research United Kingdom states that the next course of action is to "find out how to tell which men will benefit from taking the drug".

"This is important as although immunotherapy is exciting, it can have severe side effects". As a result, the stimulated immune system recognizes and fights the cancer cells present in the body. The drug in question was pembrolizumab. It is an IgG4 isotype antibody that blocks a protective mechanism of cancer cells, and allows the immune system to destroy those cancer cells.

The findings were presented at the annual meeting of the American Society's of Clinical Oncology.
