Kate Spade's husband says she suffered from depression

Maisel star posted an emotional message on social media on Wednesday, the day after her 55-year-old aunt reportedly committed suicide in her NY apartment.

Kate Spade had anxiety and depression for years, he said. He said Kate Spade suffered from depression and anxiety for several years before her death, adding that she was "actively seeking help and working closely with her doctors to treat her disease".

Spade's husband writes that "there was no indication and no warning that she would do this". He said the designer's death was "a complete shock" to him. "... it clearly wasn't her". Police say her body was found by housekeeping staff, and she'd left a note.

The 55-year-old then emphasized that he and Spade did their best to work on their problems and stayed pretty much in love with each other for years.

"We loved each other very much and simply needed a break", he said. The two had separated, and Andy was no longer living in their family home but instead was staying in an apartment nearby.

Saffo also said she had tried to persuade her sister to get in-patient treatment for mental health issues. According to Page Six, Andy and Kate had been separated for about six months. Law enforcement sources told TMZ that Spade's housekeeper found her with a red scarf around her neck.

You can read the statement below. I even said I (would) go with her and be a "patient" too (she liked that idea).

"The contents of that note as well as the physical state of the apartment and the comments of the witness lend to the credibility that it is an apparent suicide", NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said.

She was a successful designer, having founded Kate Spade New York in 1993 with her husband Andy Spade, with whom she has 13-year-old daughter Frances.

Saffo said she'd come close to getting Kate Spade into treatment, but she backed out every time.

Andy Spade, seen here with Kate Spade in 2000, has spoken out about his wife's death. "There were no business problems", he said in his statement.

Kate and Andy Spade sold their last stake in the Kate Spade accessories brand in 2006 to focus on raising their daughter, Frances Beatrix Spade. Ms. Arons, who worked with both Mr. and Ms. Spade during the period they were separating, said they continued to work well together. There was a note beside her, addressed to her daughter. We were coparenting our attractive daughter.

"Fuzzy picture but I love it. Kate and I during Christmas family photos".
