Kim, Trump arrive in Singapore for landmark summit

Kim, Trump arrive in Singapore for landmark summit

The Singapore summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un will only last through lunch tomorrow (June 12), the White House says, a shorter-than-expected meeting time that raises new questions about what, if anything, will actually be accomplished.

When Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un meet in Singapore to discuss the parameters of a deal that would potentially denuclearize North Korea this week, they will be joined by NBA Hall of Famer Dennis Rodman, for some weird reason.

But this time, media have not only told North Korean citizens that their leader is out of the country, but also that he is meeting a man with whom they were openly exchanging insults only six months ago.

"This will not be just a photo-op", Mr. Trump said last Thursday during a news conference after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan visited the White House. That means giving up its nuclear arsenal - and its ability to produce or procure more nuclear weapons - permanently. In another article, the newspaper does not hide its disdain for Trump's "zero prep work" for the meeting and also credits Kim Jong-un as "the real artist" of the summit.

"People call it a historic summit but.it is important to understand that this summit was available to any US president who wanted to do it and the point is no USA president wanted to do this, and for good reasons", said Christopher Hill, a former lead US nuclear negotiator with North Korea.

Earlier in May, North Korea, too, had threatened to cancel the meeting in protest against the joint military exercise the U.S. had conducted with South Korea.

On Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo suggested U.S. sanctions and other worldwide pressure will continue until North Korea takes steps toward denuclearization.

It was a far cry from previous year when Trump threatened North Korea with "fire and fury" and mocked Kim as "little rocket man", and Kim denounced the United States president as the "mentally deranged U.S. dotard".

A report by the state-run Korean Central News Agency said the summit would feature "wide-ranging and profound talks" and was being held "under the great attention and expectation of the whole world".

The US president had told reporters in Canada that he "felt confident" about Tuesday's talks with Kim.

North Korea is reclusive, totalitarian and to most of the world, a pariah state. A large limousine with a North Korean flag was surrounded by other black vehicles with tinted window as it sped through the city's streets.

"We are hopeful this summit will have set the conditions for future successful talks", Pompeo said, describing a far more modest goal than Trump had outlined days earlier.

Some analysts said a Kim commitment to specific negotiations on denuclearisation could well be enough for Tuesday's summit to be a success. It will be the first ever meeting between a sitting US President and North Korean leader.
