Kudlow: Trump Is 'Seriously Contemplating' Separate Trade Deals with Mexico and Canada

"The government commitment remains NAFTA", said one of several officials, all of whom spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of negotiations and the ongoing efforts to manage relations with the U.S.

The White House imposed steel and aluminum tariffs against Mexico and Canada last week, citing the delayed NAFTA negotiations as reason for the decision.

This comes after the White House again floated the possibility of separate talks with Canada and Mexico. "He prefers bilateral negotiations, and he's looking at two much different countries", he said.

Kudlow also said he relayed Trump's message to a senior member of the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's office.

Kudlow told Fox News that President Donald Trump is now "seriously considering" bilateral trade talks with Mexico and Canada, an idea the president has previously floated, but added the USA will not pull out of NAFTA.

"Canada has maintained right from the beginning we believe in a trilateral NAFTA".

The federal government also continued its outreach with top USA lawmakers on Tuesday.

On Friday, Trump said he might prefer to end NAFTA in favor of separate bilateral agreements with the two US neighbors.

"I think the important thought here is he may be moving quickly towards these bilateral discussions instead of as a whole", Kudlow said. "As I said, Canada is whole lot different than Mexico". They have different problems.

The Trump administration also announced last week that it would impose stiff tariffs on steel and aluminum imports on Canada and Mexico, prompting the countries to prepare retaliatory duties on US goods.

An anonymous senior Canadian official told AFP that Canada was not taking such an option off the table, but would prefer to keep the NAFTA agreement alive.

Last week, the US imposed steel and aluminum tariffs on the European Union, Mexico and Canada. The two leaders "agreed to continue working toward a mutually beneficial outcome" on NAFTA, Trudeau's office said.
