Lions, tigers, jaguar, bear escape flooded German zoo cages sparking massive search

Police have shot dead a bear and are searching for two lions, two tigers and a jaguar that broke out of their cages in a German zoo.

The drama peaked midmorning when the bear was discovered - and shot dead. Residents in surrounding areas were told to stay indoors until all animals were accounted for.

According to German media, the animals were able to escape after flooding caused by an overnight storm.

It is unclear what circumstances lead to the bear's death.

It is reported that a river overflowed and wore down fences, allowing the risky animals a way out.

A large search operation was carried out, involving the fire services, the police and veterinarians, the spokesman said. The five big cats were found within the confines of the park and were recaptured in the afternoon.

According to the German broadcaster, heavy rain meant the water level increased and nearly the "entire zoo was flooded".

It was not clear how the animals escaped nor exactly when they got out.

One of the lions was shot dead and the other was eventually brought back into captivity.

The visitor, a woman who wishes to remain anonymous, said that Lyka the lioness had been written off as a "breeding mistake" by the Maasin Zoo in Iloilo, southern Philippines, having gone blind after being born in 2013 with eyesight problems.
