Max Verstappen sweeps Friday F1 practice in Montreal

The 2018 Canadian Grand Prix gets underway at 7.10pm United Kingdom time.

The 33-year-old Mercedes F1 driver from Hertfordshire finished Friday's first practice session in Montreal in P2.

Not only was it Ferrari's first pole in Canada since 2001, this weekend's race marks the 40th anniversary of the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal - with the inaugural race being won by Ferrari legend and the driver the circuit is named after, Gilles Villeneuve.

Lewis Hamilton would have liked to gather data on the hypersoft tyres in the first two practice sessions in Canada.

His Red Bull team-mate Daniel Ricciardo, victorious in Monaco two weeks ago, was third fastest ahead of four-time champion Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari and Finn Valtteri Bottas, who was fifth in the second Mercedes.

"We are not there yet and we need a little more time to get it all together, but I expect we will be there tomorrow (Saturday for qualifying). If we got in that mess around here on this circuit, it is not as bad as Monaco but it is still very hard to make much progress here".

The 2007 world champion said the moment which led to the mistake caught him off guard as he had not encountered anything similar through that part of the track all day. "It's a great result for all the team, but I think I could have been even faster". Picture: Steve Etherington for Mercedes-Benz Grand Prix Ltd.

"In previous years we would run a low downforce setting here, whereas now it's kind of normal, so the vehicle feels great through the corners".

"I think I was a bit in trouble after Friday practice, but I guess I woke up the right way today".

It was clearly a strategic scrap as the teams were aiming to use the tyres in Q2 that would suit them best to start the race.

Hamilton still believes he could have extracted a pole time from the W09 had he not been struggling in what he normally counts as his strongest section of the track. "Yeah, so really, really happy and it's an important day for us but, for sure, Saturday is not as important as Sunday so we hope to do well tomorrow as well". "Ferrari did a better job today and that's just the way it is".

"So we should be there or thereabouts". "I was a lot happier with the vehicle and I think we can carry that into the race". It didn't make any difference to him ultimately, mind, going through P4.

"No, we didn't. It was a very smooth session, to be honest".
