Microsoft rolls out redesigned news app on Android

Microsoft has launched a new current affairs app for iOS and Android, giving you yet another way to funnel the latest news to your phone.

It's official, Microsoft's MSN News app has officially been renamed to "Microsoft News" on iOS and Android, though the new branding won't replace the decades-old MSN brand.

Formerly known as MSN News, the app has now been redesigned so it will be easier for you to get the news that you're interested in and that you need to know. However, it does let you build your own front page by specifying custom topics, and presents a selection of local news if it knows your location.

Under the hood, however, Microsoft News represents the company's efforts in consolidating its various tools and services aimed at promulgating, aggregating and curating news.

You can choose between a light and dark theme, and opt to receive notifications for breaking news stories. You can try it now by grabbing the free app from Google Play and the App Store.

Like other news apps from Apple and Google, you can select news subjects that interest you and the app will use those interests to suggest the latest stories to you. In the blog post announcing the change, the Editor in Chief of Microsoft News, Rob Bennet, boasted working partnerships with an impressive 3,000 brands and over 1,000 premium publishers, including the likes of The New York Times, The Washington Post, and BBC News.

Microsoft stated that as part of this program they have paid more than $600 million to publishers in the past four years through this advertising revenue share. For now, though, Microsoft claims that it has a team of 800 editors across the world to serve curated news in multiple regions.
