Mum shares touching story about daughter's first Kate Spade purchase

Hours after a medical examiner ruled Kate Spade's death a suicide by hanging, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a harrowing study revealing suicide rates are on the rise in almost every state. "Anyone contemplating suicide should know that help is available, and that there is no shame in seeking care for your mental health", Dr. Altha Stewart of the American Psychiatric Association said in a statement.

The report showed an overall 25.4 percent increase nationally during the period, with only one state - Nevada - seeing a decrease in its rate.

Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death and is one of just three leading causes that are increasing, along with unintentional injuries and Alzheimer's disease. "Telling someone how they feel is seldom a successful strategy for anything", Dvoskin says.

But the two deaths, along with stories about the rising suicide rate nationally, have led to increased attention to suicide and associated resources.

Rates of increase varied.

A new report from the Centers for Disease Control shows the suicide rate grew 20 percent faster in Kansas than the national average. The most common method, regardless of whether a mental health disorder had been diagnosed, was firearms.

Anthony Bourdain committed suicide the same week as Kate Spade, even as the CDC reported a rise in suicides across the country. "You can only point people toward help and hope that those that are out there in need will pick up the phone and call someone".

"We have a long way to go to strengthen our community and health systems to make sure when someone is at risk we get them to care", Jerry Reed, an executive committee member of the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention, told The Wall Street Journal.

The CDC recommends that states take a comprehensive public health approach to suicide prevention, and that everyone remain vigilant about possible warning signs. CDC also found that access to medications and weapons influenced the upward trend in suicides.

Sikora: "Yes, unfortunately, a suicide death that is highly publicized can result in what we can call copycat suicides, and that's an unfortunate reality that has been well-researched, well-studied and well-documented". Other contributing factors to suicide can include substance use, financial issues and physical health. That rate is 32% for the state of Indiana.

Summers said the key takeaway from the report is that the entire country is experiencing greater suicide rates than in the past.

I don't know that people who have never had depression can understand what it's really like to be depressed. She said it's a myth that to broach the topic of suicide will invite someone to do so or put the thought in their head.

Sometimes when a famous person is in the news after committing suicide, there's a tendency for people-especially fans-to want to do it themselves.

Mental health problems, often undiagnosed, are usually involved and experts say knowing warning signs and who is at risk can help stop a crisis from becoming a tragedy.
