Net neutrality rules are repealed. Here's what could happen next

For example, users who oppose the repeal of net neutrality fear that internet providers will start bundling services like Facebook and Instagram together, in the same way cable companies bundle certain channels together for a price.

Monday marks the official end of the federal government's net neutrality rules, the Obama-era regulations that said Internet providers can't block or slow down websites, or prioritize their own content over others.

The net neutrality rules said companies had to treat all data equally. It's a major turning point for Internet policy and the Web as a whole, as broadband providers will enjoy additional freedom to seek new ways of making money in a rapidly changing market.

The objective of the net neutrality rules has been primarily to stop discrimination from internet service providers (ISPs) against both large and small websites based on the type of content they serve.

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Ajit Pai told "CBS This Morning" that the new rules will provide a "light touch approach" that produces "tremendously positive" benefits for consumers.

And while a new administration in 2020 could, in theory, return the rules back to what they were, a more permanent decision still lies with Congress.

The Federal Trade Commission will be able to investigate if internet providers engage in anticompetitive behavior.

In a press release Monday, the FCC said the repeal does away with "unnecessary, heavy-handed regulations" and replaces them with "common-sense regulations that will promote investment and broadband deployment".

How soon should I expect broadband providers to make changes?

.

The net neutrality rules were approved in 2015.

Net neutrality advocates have heard that argument before and don't buy it. Last week, Senate Democrats urged House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin, to bring the issue to a vote on the House floor.

Net neutrality was repealed previous year under an order called the "Restoring Internet Freedom" order.

Supporters of net neutrality are concerned that without it, we could lose access to a free and open internet.

Ajit Pai, who chairs the FCC, was known to oppose net neutrality and in the past had said it was a brake on innovation.

Any changes are likely to happen slowly, as companies assess how much consumers will tolerate.

"It's now as clear as day to every American that - with the exception of three Republicans in the Senate - their Republican representatives in the Congress chose to protect special interests and the biggest corporates over middle-class families, average consumers, entrepreneurs and anyone who relies on the free and open internet", Schumer said.
