Press aide who mocked McCain is out at White House

Press aide who mocked McCain is out at White House

Sadler's comments became a maelstrom because neither she nor anyone else in the White House publicly apologized - even after McCain family members, Republican senators and others expressed outrage.

On Tuesday evening, deputy press secretary Raj Shah said in a statement: "Kelly Sadler is no longer employed within the Executive Office of the President".

In the aftermath of the comment - in which Sadler told a meeting that McCain's opposition to Central Intelligence Agency director nominee Gina Haspel didn't matter because he's "dying" - the White House refused to condemn her remark.

Under normal circumstances one would expect the White House to quickly fire an aide who mocked a senator battling brain cancer, but that's not what happened.

It is unclear if Sadler's exit was a result of her comments about the Arizona senator, which were made during a White House internal staff meeting and subsequently leaked almost a month ago. John McCain's health last month is out of a job, CNN reported Tuesday.

The White House has not disputed the remark Sadler reportedly made, but only issued a statement shortly after that, "We respect Senator McCain's service to our nation and he and his family are in our prayers during this hard time".

CNN first reported Sadler's departure, the circumstances of which are unclear.

Sadler's heartless remark quickly drew a firestorm of criticism, including from McCain's wife, Cindy.

Meghan McCain, a conservative commentator on ABC's popular morning talk show "The View", delivered a defence of her father.

White House aide jokes about senator dying.

"Ms. Haspel's role in overseeing the use of torture by Americans is disturbing", McCain said in a statement.
