Taliban leaders declare Eid ceasefire with Afghan forces

President Ashraf Ghani, whose calls for peace have not been met with response yet, announced a unilateral ceasefire on Thursday with Taliban, but not with the so-called "Daesh" organization.

The Taliban on Saturday announced their first-ever cease-fire since the start of the Afghan War, accepting the Kabul government's offer to halt fighting at the conclusion of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The Taliban claimed the last night attack, which Herat provincial governor spokesman Jilani Farhad told AFP killed 19 members of the Afghan security forces and wounded another.

A suicide attack in Kabul, a roadside bomb in eastern Ghazni Province, and coordinated attacks in Nangarhar and Kunduz provinces killed at least 33 people on June 11, Afghan officials say.

Jarett Blanc, a former USA diplomat who was involved in earlier efforts to start a peace process with the Taliban, said the cease-fire provides an opportunity for both sides to demonstrate control over their armed forces. Noori also confirmed that the bomb was implanted by the Taliban group. It was not immediately clear how many of them were among those killed.

Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday welcomed the ceasefire between terror group Taliban and the federal government in Afghanistan during Eidul Fitr which is expected to commence on June 16.

Qureshi said eight militants were killed and nine wounded in the clashes. "In Afghanistan, the Taliban genuinely doubt the government of Afghanistan's ability to control the most important armed forces, which is ours". "But if the mujahideen are attacked we will strongly defend [ourselves]".

The Taliban announced Saturday its first cease-fire in Afghanistan.

The government truce, which excludes the Islamic State (IS) extremist group and Al-Qaeda, will last from June 12 until around June 20.

A former high-ranking Taliban official said the temporary peace deal could be extended and efforts for direct peace talks could be made.

The statement said the Taliban may also consider releasing prisoners of war, if they promise not to return to the battlefield.

US President Donald Trump unveiled a more hawkish military approach to Afghanistan in August previous year, including a surge in air strikes aimed at forcing the Taliban to the negotiating table.

U.S. General John Nicholson, commander of U.S. Forces-Afghanistan and NATO-led Resolute Support mission, said the coalition forces will also honor the cease-fire.
