The end of net neutrality is here

The Internet & Television Association said over the summer that it supported net neutrality but did not believe that the Obama-era regulations promote it.

As the FCC's rollback of net neutrality protections officially took effect on Monday, a broad coalition of free press and digital rights campaigners vowed to maintain pressure on members of Congress to either restore the federal rules "or prepare to face our wrath" in the November midterm elections.

The Republican-led Federal Communications Commission voted along party lines in December to repeal the rules, which were meant to prevent internet providers from blocking, speeding up, or slowing down access to specific online services.

"Poll after poll after poll after poll shows large majorities of Republican voters in opposition to the FCC's repeal", Karr pointed out. The FCC voted to repeal those protections in December saying that the rules were too heavy handed. But even so, we are likely to see some changes in the near future. If you're interested in letting your representatives know where you stand on net neutrality and how you'd like them to vote, you can see a tally of who has and hasn't agreed to support net neutrality here. The first would be protecting users from bias caused by internet providers, who would be able to offer faster services to companies that paid them more. Net neutrality rules were created for two reasons. The rule stipulates that every ISP must clearly disclose their practices to consumers and that the Federal Trade Commission will regulate any ISP that imposes unfair or deceptive practices.

Pai has said he agrees with the concept of a "free and open" internet, but disagrees that regulating the service like phone networks is the best way to achieve that goal. "Blocking, throttling, pay-for-priority fast lanes and other efforts to come between consumers and the Internet are now things of the past, "he said in 2015". "And in the medium- to long-term, I think we're going to see more investment in high-speed networks, particularly in rural areas that are hard to serve". Now the vote goes the House, which has until the end of the year to bring to a vote. Now Comcast Cable president Dave Watson posted a blog post today to reconfirm Comcast's "committed to an open internet". "The internet is coming for net neutrality", said Greer. In 2015, the FCC approved a set of regulations on ISPs. What's more, five Democratic governors have issued executive orders barring their states from doing business with a broadband firm that violates the principals of net neutrality.
