The Senator SLAMS Media's 'INCREDIBLE HYPOCRISY' over Trump-Kim Summit — RUBIO UNLEASHED

The Senator SLAMS Media's 'INCREDIBLE HYPOCRISY' over Trump-Kim Summit — RUBIO UNLEASHED

President Donald Trump, for whom disarming the reclusive nation has been a key foreign policy goal since taking office, called the summit in Singapore "very successful".

It was a delicately choreographed moment.

The official statement was light on specifics (though it did say the two sides would proceed with follow-up negotiations as soon as possible), but as the G7 summit earlier this week showed, having Trump sign a joint statement and not immediately retract his support of it is a victory in itself. For all the concessions Kim got in the summit, the one he really needed-the lifting of economic sanctions-eluded him, and those sanctions remain in place and as crushing as ever. "There were obstacles but we overcame them to be here".

Following the unprecedented meeting in Singapore, Trump stunned observers when he said continuing the exercises routinely held between the United States and South Korea would be "inappropriate" while Washington fleshes out a comprehensive deal with Pyongyang.

"India welcomes the United States-DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) Summit held in Singapore".

"President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un conducted a comprehensive, in-depth, and honest exchange of opinions on the issues related to the establishment of new US-DPRK relations and the building of a lasting and robust peace regime on the Korean Peninsula".

After the talks, the U.S. president said that the process of denuclearisation on the Korean peninsula will begin very soon and the North Korean leader promised to leave the past behind.

Pentagon leaders have largely stayed on the sidelines in the run up to the Singapore talks, but Defense Secretary James N. Mattis said Monday there would be no consideration given to a partial drawdown or full withdrawal of the 28,000 US troops stationed on the Korean peninsula.

North Korea's development of nuclear weapons jeopardized the safety of recovery teams previous American administrations sent to the country, so efforts to recover and return the remains have been stalled for more than a decade, AP noted.

The report added Trump said he "understood" and promised to halt joint U.S.

A new era, or same empty promises?

A favoured US slogan in South Korea is "ready to fight tonight".

"It was a great success for North Korea", said Sung-Yoon Lee, a professor at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University who is an expert on Korea. "This looks like a restatement of where we left negotiations more than 10 years ago and not a major step forward". "The [denuclearization] bullet is weaker than the Six Party Talks language".

Trump is scheduled for a news conference at 4pm local time. "We will provide additional information as it becomes available", Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Christopher Logan said Tuesday.

The Singapore summit was a potentially legacy-defining meeting for both men - comparable to president Richard Nixon's 1972 visit to China, or Ronald Reagan's 1986 summit with Mikhail Gorbachev in Reykjavik.

The agreement lacks details and a timetable on denuclearization.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said it was "very worrisome" that the statement was "so imprecise", and that it gives Pyongyang "substantial leverage".

"We have watched this historic U.S".

Trump said the USA will cut back on its military exercises with South Korea but will not withdraw any American forces.

"In coordination with our (South Korean) partners, we will continue with our current military posture until we receive updated guidance from the Department of Defense and/or Indo-Pacific Command", Colonel Chad Carroll, spokesperson for USFK, said in a statement.

The US stations around 30,000 troops in security ally South Korea to protect it from its neighbor, which invaded in 1950 in an attempt to reunify the peninsula by force.

But Daniel Davis, a retired army lieutenant colonel and fellow at the Defense Priorities military think tank, said suspending the drills would have no short-term impact on US and South Korean military readiness. "I think we just need to continue to be concerned about whether or not North Korea is going to stand by its word".

"Christians, yes", said Trump.

"I want to bring our soldiers back home", he said. That's not part of the equation.

"Over the last two months the border is more open than it was when we first started", Trump told reporters in Singapore.

The meeting on Tuesday between the USA president and North Korea's leader, unthinkable until recent months and uncertain until June 1, is a high-stakes and politically risky venture into summit diplomacy by two unpredictable personalities who have famously exchanged personal insults and threats of war. Or, he for now at least has the semblance of it.

"The American military presence in South Korea wouldn't mean much if the militaries don't practice through joint drills", said Moon, now a senior analyst for the Seoul-based Korea Research Institute for National Strategy.
