Trump, Kim make history with first-ever US-North Korean summit

"It's my honor, and we will have a terrific relationship, I have no doubt", Trump said in brief remarks to reporters moments after their history-making handshake.

Rodman grew emotional in the interview as he recalled former president Barack Obama failing to take him seriously when he returned from Pyongyang with a message from Mr Kim after one of his trips. Trump's team claims those warnings can be credited for new rounds of worldwide sanctions and, ultimately, Tuesday's summit.

A USA official subsequently told CNN that the two sides intend to sign a document acknowledging progress and pledging to maintain momentum- a broad statement that would suggest some hyperbole in Mr. Trump's pledges of great success. But he also patted the US president' arm, in an attempt to show control over the encounter.

The meeting, long sought by Pyongyang, will be the first ever between a serving U.S. president and a North Korean leader, and will focus on the nuclear bombs and ballistic missiles the North has spent decades developing.

"We had a historic meeting and chose to leave the past behind and we are about to sign the historic document", Kim said through a translator.

Trump and Kim met for about 40 minutes Tuesday one-on-one, joined only by interpreters.

The two leaders met for a working lunch yesterday at the Istana, a day before Mr Trump's summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the Capella hotel on Sentosa. "I think that's a long process but this is a first step which happens in Singapore and well, we are happy to be associated with it", he said.

"The past. and the old prejudices and practices worked as obstacles on our way forward".

Kim Jong Un (in Korean, via a translator): "Well, it was not easy to get here". I thought I was going to play basketball and meet the people and that was it.

But a war would mean devastating casualties, including of American troops in South Korea, and American cities would also be at risk of suffering a nuclear strike because of the North's recent advances. As the two flags hung side-by-side in the backdrop for the first time ever, both Kim and Trump expressed hope that their summit would be fruitful.

But many, if not all analysts, say that this is highly unlikely, given how hard it has been for Kim to build his program and that the weapons are seen as the only protection he has. He gave no answer.

"President Trump recognizes Chairman Kim's desire for security, and is prepared to ensure that a North Korea free of weapons of mass destruction is also a secure North Korea", he added.

Trump made the comments as he and Kim walked together along balcony as they headed to a larger meeting with aides.

But experts have expressed doubt that Pyongyang would abandon its hard-won nuclear gains after demonstrating rapid progress in their program with a series of missile and nuclear tests previous year. Funds for military activities are obtained from remittances that come from the forced labor of North Koreans sent overseas, as well as forced labor domestically. But some US officials have questioned whether Trump was doing enough to get up to speed. He suggested, however, that more talks will be needed.
