US President Trump arrives in Singapore for historic Trump-Kim summit

Kim Jong Un's entourage has left for the luxury Singapore island resort where the North Korean leader will meet with President Donald Trump.

After the June 2000 summit, family members in North and South Korea separated by the Korean War were able to reunite, and the two Koreas marched together in the opening ceremony of the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the delegations were "rapidly" making progress, but it will come down to the meeting between the two leaders.

The Trump-Kim summit, which will be held at the Capella Hotel on Tuesday morning, will mark the first time a North Korean leader has met with a sitting United States president. This has included backing away from an original demand for North Korea's swift denuclearisation.

For the first time on Sunday, North Korean state TV announced details of Kim's schedule in Singapore, describing the summit as "historic" and saying Kim would be exchanging "wide-ranging and profound views" with President Trump.

"Nice to meet you Mister President", Kim said moments later as he sat alongside Trump, against a backcloth of North Korean and USA flags, beaming more broadly as the US president gave him a thumbs up. Then aides to each were to join for more discussions and a working lunch.

Still, the sense of anticipation was great in Singapore, with people lining spotless streets holding cellphones high as Trump headed to meet Lee.

The report also said Mr Kim was accompanied by his foreign minister Ri Yong Ho, defence minister No Kwang Chol and sister Ms Kim Yo Jong.

"I told them today, take your time".

"#Peace #Love #HistoricalSummit #Singapore #PresidentTrump #MarshallKimJongUn", Rodman, who is one of the few Americans to have traveled previously to North Korea and met with Kim Jong Un, tweeted Monday.

Although gaps remain over what denuclearisation would entail, Trump sounded a positive note in a lunch meeting with Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Just meeting with Trump will also give Kim a recognition North Korea has long sought, setting him up as global player and the leader of a country worthy of respect.

North Korea, though, has shown little appetite for surrendering nuclear weapons it considers vital to the survival of Kim's dynastic rule.

Even so, the summit continues to be a highly sensitive topic in North Korea and it is hard - even more so than usual - to get people to express their opinions about it.

No is North Korea's minister of the People's Armed Forces.

Following that test, North Korea declared its state nuclear program was complete.
