World No Tobacco Day offers chance to win a personal CO monitor

It is the initiative of the World Health Organisation (WHO), with the intention to draw the attention of the global community to the health risks associated with tobacco use and advocate for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption.

The global tobacco epidemic kills more than 7 million people each year, which means that, every day, more than 19,000 people die from tobacco use or second-hand smoke exposure.

Despite the devastating harm of tobacco to heart health and availability of solutions to reduce tobacco-related deaths and diseases, knowledge among a majority of the public that tobacco is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular disease (CVD), is low.

She called on individuals to promote healthy hearts by committing not to use tobacco, helping others to quit, protect all people including family members, workers and children from tobacco smoke.

"Other steps include creating completely smoke-free indoor workplaces and public places, instituting hard-hitting warnings and graphic pictures about the dangers of smoking on cigarette packaging, and banning tobacco advertisement, promotion and sponsorship".

Today, the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Health, marked World No Tobacco Day by launching Canada's Tobacco Strategy.

Tobacco use is a major cause of non-communicable disease, not only in Myanmar but also worldwide. "For our part, we're determined to deliver a smoke-free future through innovations that stand up to scientific scrutiny and that meet consumer needs".

CASES of coronary heart disease that require special treatment are increasing from year to year, according to the number of registrations at the Gleneagles Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC), which recorded 143 patients in 2016 and 152 the following year.

WHO Director-General, Dr Margaret Chan says tobacco threatens the world.

Smoking and the use of other tobacco products will not be allowed during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, adhering to an initiative first implemented 30 years ago at Calgary 1988. Most of the cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and cancer types, including some 80-85% of lung cancer are caused by long-term smoking. The use of Bidis account for a significant proportion of tobacco use.

Yet in many countries, there is low awareness that smoking significantly increases your chances of developing cardiovascular disease, World Health Organization said. The number of smokers in the world has barely changed this century: it was also 1.1 billion in 2000.

Most smokers are aware of the health risks of smoking and the benefits of quitting.

Vietnam is among the 15 countries with the world's highest smoking prevalence among male adults when one in every two male adults is a smoker. It also works to ensure that vulnerable populations affected by this transformation, especially small tobacco farmers, are able to transition to sustainable livelihoods.
