Australian director breaks into Hollywood big time with Black Widow

Marvel Studios is moving ahead with the Black Widow movie as it has found a director with Cate Shortland. Other directors on the shortlist included Amma Asante (Belle), Maggie Betts (Noviate), Melanie Laurent (Galveston), and Kimberly Pierce (Boys Don't Cry).

According to THR, Marvel Studios met with over 70 potential directors before hiring Shortland.

A film starring Scarlett Johansson's Marvel Cinematic Universe character has been rumored for the past few years, but that rumor now seems much closer to reality.

The Australian director made her name with her awesome 2004 debut Summersault, and her most recent movie - kidnap thriller Berlin Syndrome - was one of our hidden gems of 2017. As one of the few movies we know about that will be released by Marvel post-Avengers 4, we're personally quite curious to see what the studio and Shortland can come up with.

Shortland doesn't even have agency representation, but Johansson pushed for the filmmaker to land the gig as the actress had a strong hand in picking this director.

Set before the first Avengers film, the movie will be Marvel's second female-fronted film after Captain Marvel, due in 2019.

The film has been in development for a while but picked up momentum in January when Jac Schaeffer was tapped to pen the script. Kevin Feige is producing the project.

Scar-Jo will reprise the role for the movie which is said to be set before the events of the first Avengers movie.

Scarlett Johansson is also producing the Black Widow movie, and she recently appeared in The Avengers: Infinity War.
