Deadly bacteria fears: Supermarkets recall frozen vegetables

Deadly bacteria fears: Supermarkets recall frozen vegetables

The food retailer on Tuesday recalled the Frozen Savoury Rice Mix due to concerns over a listeria outbreak in Europe. "There should be a mandatory law that you can only export what we do not need and no foreign veg and fruit can be imported".

About 20 per cent of frozen vegetables sold in Australia are from overseas.

Listeria is a life-threatening illness for certain people, particularly those over the age of 60.

Listeria is found widely in the environment, but is particularly risky for pregnant women and their unborn babies, and can cause death in people with compromised immune systems.

Symptoms could include headache, fever, tiredness and aches and pains.

Earlier this year, a local outbreak of listeria blamed on a NSW rockmelon supplier caused at least six deaths and a miscarriage in Victoria and NSW.

Have you bought any of the recalled vegetables?

The food chain says this is a voluntary recall and customers will receive a full refund.

Only ALDI products with country of origin Belgium, Hungary or the United Kingdom are affected by the recall.

The factory has been implicated as the potential source of a listeria outbreak in Europe.

"If you are a healthy adult you'd have to eat a lot of frozen vegetables to make you sick because most of the potentially risky bacteria is killed by the acid in your stomach", Mr Kennedy said.

The latest items to be recalled include Tesco's Frozen Mixed Vegetables and Peppers, Lidl's Green Grocer's Carrots, Broccoli and Sweetcorn, and Sainsbury's Mixed Vegetables.

IGA: Black & Gold Corn Kernels 500g bags.

Aldi: Market Fare Mixed Vegetables 1kg.

Woolworths: Bell Farms Steam Veggie Carrot Corn and Broccoli 3pk 450g.

ALDI - Market Fare Quick Steam Carrot Corn and Broccoli 450g - National distribution.

The recall of the frozen vegetables originating from Belgium and Hungary was issued on Monday.
