Djokovic edges ahead of Nadal in semi-final thriller

Djokovic edges ahead of Nadal in semi-final thriller

The 32-year old Anderson defeated defending champion Federer in a five-set thriller that lasted slightly more than four hours.

"I don't really know what to say right now". Just playing like that in those conditions was really tough on both of us.

Whoever wins will surely be favored in the final against either John Isner or Kevin Anderson.

Djokovic-Nadal had clearly been the headline act of the day - they have five Wimbledon titles between them and met in the 2011 final while Anderson and Isner had never made the semifinals before - and their tennis was at another level from the earlier match. But Anderson roared back, outlasting the great Swiss to win 2-6 6-7 7-5 6-4 13-11.

NADAL-DJOKOVIC DELAYED That recovery process started as soon as he came off Centre Court at 7:46 p.m. on Friday. However many times he's lost to Djokovic in the past-and that includes the 2011 Wimbledon final-he's now No. 1 and coming off a major title in Paris, while Djokovic is still climbing his way back up the charts.

He had break points in the 15th, 21st and 35th games of the decider before taking victory when a tired Isner, who had needed treatment for blisters on his right hand, hit long. Having reached the US Open final previous year, Anderson will also be one-up on Isner in the big-stage experience department. The fifth set lasted 175 minutes.

"I'm a proponent of changing that rule, for sure", Isner said.

"I apologise if I'm not excited".

After the exhausting quarter-final against Juan Martin del Potro, which was just a minute shorter than his classic 2008 final against Roger Federer, Nadal appeared remarkably fresh during a drama-filled third set as both players pounded the ball in a baseline duel.

However, soon after Djokovic had gone on social media to show he had been reduced to playing a game of marbles on the locker room floor - a message punctuated with three laughing emojis - Anderson delivered the knockout blow to reach the Wimbledon final at the 10th time of asking. The US Open is the lone major that has a tiebreak in the deciding set.

"I think grass is her best surface".

Isner, who previously said Wimbledon had become "a house of horrors" for him since his 2010 match, had been trying to become the first American man to reach the final since Andy Roddick in 2009.

Isner's 53 aces meant he beat Goran Ivanisevic's Wimbledon record haul - the Croatian sent down 213 in 2001 - but the 214th he served was his last of the tournament.

Isner said he agreed with Anderson that tiebreakers - at some point in the fifth set - were the way to go.

Despite coming out on top, Anderson echoed those sentiments and suggested the duration of the match may have taken away from the spectacle for the fans - one of whom shouted, "Come on guys, we want to see Rafa!" in the 27th game of the decider.

The crowd knew it, the spectators knew and although Isner might not be willing to admit it, Anderson did. Anderson, who typically shows a reserved demeanor, would frequently fist-pump after winning a point. The American roared and turned to his box as he took the third set on his third set point.

Isner said that being part of yet another record-breaking match did not help ease his pain.

Kevin Anderson will advance to the Wimbledon final on Sunday after beating John Isner in a grueling match that went on for more than six and a half hours.

The right-handed Anderson slipped and fell, but scrambled back to his feet in time to hit a return left-handed and continue the point before Isner eventually pushed a forehand just wide.

This time a year ago, few would have expected to see either man back in the last-four at the All England Club.
