John Isner loses to eight seed in longest semifinal match at Wimbledon

John Isner loses to eight seed in longest semifinal match at Wimbledon

Back in 2004 fellow college freshmen John Isner and Kevin Anderson stepped onto court to play one another in an inter-university match.

John Isner of the United States stumbles as he returns the ball to South Africa's Kevin Anderson during their men's singles semifinals match at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, in London, Friday July 13, 2018.

Anderson was the 10th most popular surname in WA, according to a 2012 survey.

When it was all done and dusted, there were no wild roars, no fist pumping and no raised arms in celebration - all Anderson had left in him was to give Isner a sympathetic hug after he came out on top in the second longest match ever contested at the All England Club.

Anderson, 32, will vie for the title on Sunday against the victor of the match between Nadal, the world No. 1, and three-time champion Novak Djokovic. Isner was a part of that one as well in 2010, beating Nicolas Mahut 70-68 in the fifth set after 11 hours, 5 minutes - the longest match at any tournament.

And he made it clear Grand Slam tournament organisers should consider a rule change - perhaps introducing a tie-break at 6-6 - to make the deciding set of five-set matches less gruelling.

Anderson then decisively broke the American in the 49th game of the final set, and held his serve to take it 26-24 and set up a final with either Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic.

"Just playing like that in those conditions was tough on both of us".

It was, inevitably, a match of big serves galore, with an 129mph second serve from Isner a highlight, but both offered plenty off the ground too in an engaging five-set encounter. It was a drama filled set that went back-and-forth, similar to the third set.

"I played two matches over six hours in my career".

As it became clear that Isner was due for another endless fifth set, tennis fans were far from delighted.

Anderson was coming off a huge upset win in the quarterfinals over Roger Federer.

Nadal, 32, is back in the semi-finals at Wimbledon for the first time since 2011 when he finished runner-up to Djokovic.
