London police detain Maryam Nawaz’s son for ‘punching PTI worker’

As Begum Kulsoom Nawaz regained "consciousness" on Thursday and deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif confirmed his homecoming on Friday, the stage is set for a tense showdown between the Punjab caretaker government and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) zealots amid a police crackdown on party workers in Lahore and its surrounding areas.

In separate statements, Nawaz's children Maryam and Hussain said that their mother had opened her eyes for a few seconds exactly one month after losing consciousness and being placed on a ventilator.

According to reports, a team of Pakistan's National Accountability Bureau is trying to leave for Abu Dhabi to board the flight taken by the Sharifs, so they can be arrested as soon as the plane enters Pakistani airspace.

On July 6, Nawaz Sharif was sentenced to a total of 11 years in prison and slapped a £8 million fine (Rs1.3 billion) in the Avenfield properties reference while his daughter Maryam was sentenced to eight years with a £2 million fine (Rs335 million). He said he was returning to the country so that he could pay back the Pakistani nation for what they had done for him: making him prime minister three times. Don't know if she saw or registered us.

NAB has acquired two helicopters-one at Lahore's Allama Iqbal International Airport and the other at the New Islamabad International Airport to transport the two convicts.

Recent opinion polls suggest PML-N has lost its lead nationally to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party of arch-rival Khan, whose anti-corruption message has resonated with many Pakistanis.

"He is convicted, so he has to be arrested first and can not be allowed to roam around in the city", Zafar said.

PML-N leaders say authorities have began a crackdown against union council leaders, the street-level party workers who bring out people on the streets.

"Nawaz really believes this is about democracy and his legacy", Musadik Malik, Sharif ally and former PML-N cabinet minister, told Reuters.

The Lahore Police has already carried out a dozen or so raids across the city and arrested 300 workers of Mr Sharif's political party. He said the arrested PML-N activists have been detained for 30 days under public order. "When I had talked about (taking certain measures) they termed it news leaks", he said, and added that ever since his expulsion, the country's economy had suffered a lot and Pakistani currency had been devalued.

About 300 workers of Nawaz Sharif's party have been arrested in Lahore ahead of his return.

Sharif has also said the military's intelligence wing, the Inter-Services Intelligence agency, is intimidating his party's candidates to switch loyalties, or to run as independents, ahead of the July 25 poll. His brother Shehbaz became PML-N's president, but Sharif remains the power behind the throne. "Judge's verdict stated that there was no proof of corruption against Nawaz", he said while adding that he was sentenced based on presumptions.
