‘Not justified!’ Trump could DESTROY NATO, claims German politician

"Prior to a year ago, where I attended my last meeting it was going down, the amount of money being spent by countries was going down and down very substantially", he said.

Speaking after a two-day summit in Brussels, he said allies had committed to spending more than 2% of their annual output (GDP) on defence budgets.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg cited a "new sense of urgency, and all allies agreed to redouble their efforts".

He also said he thought spending of 4 percent on defence - similar to the U.S. level - would be the right level.

One reporter asked the president if he would perhaps change his mind about the demand for immediate spending hikes once he boarded his plane and had time to reflect, but Trump insisted he would not.

With allies fearing he could strike some sort of deal with Nato's key adversary, Trump said that he saw Putin as a "competitor" but not an "enemy".

Trump's surprise demand came after he clashed with Chancellor Angela Merkel, calling Germany a "captive" of Russian Federation because of its gas links and singling out Berlin for failing to pay its way.

Mr. Peskov said Moscow regards USA objections to the new pipeline as "unfair competition" aimed at trying to force European countries to buy costlier liquefied natural gas from the United States.

Arguing many countries feel NATO has been used to support US-led wars rather than protect the borders from a Russian threat, he said: "If NATO continues its policies, it would lose all the support it had in the past".

Despite that, Stoltenberg had been forced to call an extraordinary session of all 29 allies to discuss Trump's demands, in what officials said was one of the first of its kind at a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit for a decade.

Brussels may dismiss this as typical Trumpian bluster, but my sense is that Trump is not bluffing.

Since then eight of the 29 allies have managed to achieve the 2 per cent level, and a majority have budget plans to reach it by 2024.

As for Johnson, Trump said: "I think he would be a great prime minister".

U.S. lawmakers want Trump, both privately with Putin and publicly, to condemn Russia's actions.

Trump finally managed to hold Melania's hand.

"She wanted to go a different route. Yesterday I let them know that I was extremely unhappy with what was happening, and they have substantially upped their commitment".

Trump's attack, including one where he called Germany a "captive to Russian Federation", apparently was a big show, that Trump wanted to do right away, when cameras were on. Trump wants the spending to go up to 4% of GDP, which is more than even the US now spends on defense.

"That is something we certainly agree with", Trudeau told a news conference.

Trump has described the spending situation as "disproportionate and not fair to the taxpayers of the United States".

The reason is that the 2 percent standard came from a collective defense agreement against a formidable foe (the Soviet Union) that doesn't exist anymore.

In 2011, when the U.S. was still heavily involved in Afghanistan and Iraq, defence spending was at 4.78% of GDP.

Although administration officials point to the long-standing alliance between the United States and the United Kingdom, Trump's itinerary will largely keep him out of central London, where significant protests are expected.
