Passenger Transportation Board to fast-track applications for inter-city bus service

Passenger Transportation Board to fast-track applications for inter-city bus service

All routes, except for the one running Vancouver-Seattle, in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba will be cut starting on October 31, leaving many, especially those with low-income and in rural communities, without a reasonable means of transportation. "When the ridership declines, we need to make decisions to take routes out, reduce schedules and it's just to the point now where it's not sustainable any longer". Kendrick said Greyhound Canada will continue to push Ottawa to look at improving transport in northern communities.

"Given the developments today, we need the federal government to step up and come up with a national solution that keeps Canadians connected across the country", Mason said in an email statement.

When he heard about Greyhound's plan to slash service to a large part of Canada, he said he was reminded of the near loss of bus services in the Maritimes six years ago.

The company was started in 2015 and operates on a "lower demand model", because there is not a strong enough demand for full size coaches, said the company's owner and founder Kasper Wabinski in a phone call with CTV News.

"We've seen in the last eight to 10 years a complete spiralling down of our ridership".

Greyhound spokesperson Wendy Cummings said the company takes the safety of Indigenous women and girls "very seriously".

Odelie Bernard-Labelle from Montreal was waiting at the Maritime Bus station in Halifax Wednesday, and said as a person without a vehicle, she sees buses as an important transportation option.

"In the weeks and months ahead, I will be sitting down with other service providers, the private sector and local government to discuss how we can ensure people have access to safe, reliable and affordable transportation to get from one community to the next".

"We have made the hard decision to downsize our Canadian business by discontinuing operations in all provinces except Ontario and Quebec and one route in British Columbia".

Kendrick said he understands that the decision will leave most of the affected communities with no other transportation options.

Greyhound's recent decision to cut all routes in western Canada except for one has left residents in a tight spot and Claire Trevena, B.C. Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, let them know.

The only route still operating in Northeast B.C.is the Edmonton to Dawson Creek bus, which will be shut down.

Trevena says many people can't afford to drive a auto or buy a train or plane ticket, and they rely on bus service, adding that others choose not to use personal vehicles.
