Russians indicted over United States election hack

Special Counsel Robert Mueller indicted 12 Russian military intelligence officers linked to hacking the Democratic National Committee in 2016 and other email accounts in an effort to interfere with the 2016 election.

Rosenstein's announcement took place just ahead of a planned meeting between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday in Helsinki.

The indictment, secured by Special Counsel Robert Mueller in his ongoing investigation of Russian involvement in the 2016 election won by President Donald Trump, was issued three days before Trump, who is now on a visit to Britain, meets Russian President Vladimir Putin for a summit in Helsinki.

The 12 Russians - each of whom were associated with the GRU, a Russian intelligence agency, according to the indictment - allegedly conspired with each other to "gain unauthorized access into the computers of US persons and entities involved in the 2016 USA presidential election, steal documents from those computers and stage releases of the stolen documents to interfere with the 2016 US presidential election".

The charges are against 12 members of the GRU, a Russian intelligence agency.

Hillary Clinton's campaign organization and the Democratic National Committee may have been targets, including Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta, but Rosenstein declined to identify them.

The indictment also does not allege that any vote tallies were altered by hacking.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein announced the charges at a press conference on Friday. There will always be adversaries who work to exacerbate domestic differences and try to confuse, divide, and conquer us. That includes four former Trump campaign and White House aides and 13 Russians accused of participating in a hidden but powerful social media campaign to sway American public opinion in the 2016 election.

The investigation has already indicted 20 people and three companies. Trump told reporters on his visit to the United Kingdom on Friday that he planned to "ask" Putin about Russia's attack on the election. "Pure stupidity", he said, referring to Mueller's probe. But he added, "I don't think you'll have any 'Gee, I did it, I did it, you got me" confession.
