Tushar Arothe steps down as coach of Indian Women's Cricket Team

Tushar Arothe steps down as coach of Indian Women's Cricket Team

Although he cited "personal reasons" as the primary reason for resigning, Arothe revealed strained relations with some of the Indian players, who he said need to step out of their "comfort zone" for a better future of Indian women's cricket.

"There's no hard feelings between the players and myself and any other support staff".

BCCI then hired Biju George as fielding coach to share Arothe's load, and the duo played a key role in India's journey to the World Cup final against England at Lord's where they lost by nine runs. "I wish the girls well in the forthcoming series and in the World Cup", Arothe was quoted as saying by the Times of India.

"Why were I and the players called separately to sort this out?" He had replaced Purnima Rau in April 2017.

Arothe, a Ranji Trophy victor with Baroda who played 114 first-class matches and 51 List A games between 1985-86 and 2002-03, had earlier been involved with the women's team as fielding coach in the past. "There has been adverse reports about his coaching methods from players, selectors and even the team manager", a senior BCCI official, privy to the development told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

During India's six-month hiatus from global cricket following the World Cup final at Lord's, Arothe oversaw several camps at the NCA, involving fringe players and India regulars.

Arothe was invited to explain his side of the story after few leading players including T20 captain Harmanpreet Kaur expressed reservations over his style of working. The planning fetched result when India won both the ODI and T20I series in South Africa earlier this year.

According to another report filed by News18, it was Arothe's training methods which had come under question which led to the beginning of the fallout in the first place. With an overall camp scheduled to be held on July 25, Arothe's departure now casts a shadow over its eventuality. This, more so, in the context of the team's upcoming tour of Sri Lanka in September before they head to the West Indies for the World T20.
