Twitter's Purge on Dormant Accounts Swings On

He added in another tweet, "Look, if they're genuinely fake or dead accounts, I have no problem with it.But how do we know?"

President Donald Trump, one of the most prolific and high-profile tweeters, lost about 100,000 of his approximately 53.4 million Twitter followers, according to the Washington Post, and former President Barack Obama lost about 400,000 from his 104 million followers. The change in follower counts doesn't affect the active user totals Twitter tracks and reports on a quarterly basis to investors, according to the company.

Across the board, Twitter's most followed celebrities felt a cut on Thursday.

Actor Deepika Padukone lost over 2.8 lakh followers, Aamir Khan 3 lakh, Hrithik Roshan 2.55 lakh, cricketer Virat Kohli 1.25 lakh and Sachin Tendulkar 2 lakh.

Twitter, in a blog, stated that it would suspend private accounts in a bid to curb fake news by limiting fake users: "Follower counts are a visible feature, and we want everyone to have confidence that the numbers are meaningful and accurate". Twitter said it expects the initiative to reduce the total follower count on the platform by a significant 6%, the Times reports.

Twitter locks accounts when it detects "sudden changes in account behavior", like tweeting a large volume of unsolicited replies or mentions - in other words, signs that it's engaging in spam or bot-like activity.

Nowhere has this been more true than with Twitter's own account on the platform, which lost 7.7 million followers.

Since Twitter started purging locked accounts on Thursday, the tweeter-in-chief has lost 300,000 followers.

Kenyans with a significantly small following also faced the purge with some reporting they had lost between 100-200 followers by Friday morning.

The head of the company's legal team, Vijaya Gadde, said that most accounts would only lose around four followers as a result of the new measures.

Well, it is now happening and people have started noticing the drop in follower accounts.
