U.S. officer quits after harassment over Puerto Rico shirt

The police officer who appeared to stand by and do nothing as a man harassed a woman wearing a Puerto Rican T-shirt in a Chicago park has resigned.

Mia Irizarry complained that a man at Caldwell Woods was questioning her citizenship and telling her she shouldn't be wearing the shirt, although Puerto Rico is a USA commonwealth.

He now faces two counts of felony hate crime, the Cook County State's Attorney's Office told The Post. Trybus was later charged with disorderly conduct and assault. But it became widely known this week when a video of the encounter was posted on social media, prompting condemnation from many local activists and politicians and from the governor of Puerto Rico.

"The world is not going to change the United States of America".

"I am appalled, shocked & disturbed by the officer's behavior", Rosselló tweeted.

"I do not feel comfortable with him here, is there anything you can do?"

What does the video show?

The female officer then speaks with Irizarry, who gives her version of the incident and the officer explains that they were called to the area after a report that a man was choking a woman.

"It was truly appalling, gut wrenching and a real wake up call", Cook County Commissioner Luis Arroyo Jr. said.

In the video, a man later identified as Trybus confronts and screams at a woman about her shirt, telling her she should not be wearing it in the United States. In the background, a police officer is standing outside the park pavilion.

Officer Patrick Connor had been placed on desk duty pending an investigation into the matter, and was scheduled to attend a hearing with his bosses on Thursday, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. About 10 minutes into the video, more police officers arrived.

But the officer continues to do nothing or even move closer to Irizzary as the man continues to approach her.

"I felt so drawn out", she said in the interview.

'People have just as much right to be here as you do, ' she can be heard telling him in the clip. As of Thursday morning, the video had be seen 1.5 million times.

The forest preserve district says officials continue to investigate the incident.

Quick aside and history lesson: Puerto Ricans are indeed US citizens.
