How to See the Amazing Perseid Meteor Shower in August 2018

The best summertime meteor shower - the Perseids - will be coming to a sky near you this coming weekend, weather permitting.

The Perseid meteor shower occurs every year when the Earth passes through the cloud of debris left by Comet Swift-Tuttle.

The famous Perseids meteor shower will light up the night sky in the country on August 12 and 13.

On the nights of August 12 and August 13, Cooke says stargazers all over the Northern Hemisphere should be able to see about 60 to 70 meteors streaking across the night skies - a dip from 2016, which saw more than twice as many meteors per hour, but a bump up from last year's 40 or 50, and still plenty vivid.

Usually, on these peak nights it will produce 60-70 meteors an hour, but in bursts the rate can go up to 200 an hour. What does this mean? Infinite amount of shooting stars and wishes! You can also expect to see Mars, visible until about 4 a.m. local time, and Saturn, visible until about 2 a.m. local time. The best time to view is in the pre-dawn hours.

The Perseids actually got their name from the constellation Perseus.

Comet Swift-Tuttle causes the Perseids.

So for the best look, lie back and watch the night sky, looking toward the north, and watch one of nature's greatest shows pass overhead. NASA recommends viewing the meteor shower from dark areas, such as the countryside of suburb area, so stay away from those city lights!

It can take about 30 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the dark, and Cooke said the longer you wait, the more you'll see.
