Human case of West Nile virus confirmed in Tennessee | Lexington Herald Leader

The first case of West Nile virus infection in Virginia this year has been reported in Fairfax County, coming on the heels of a confirmed case in Maryland.

Toronto's Medical Officer of Health said the unnamed individual was hospitalized and treated for the illness.

More information about WNV, mosquitoes in Boulder County and preventive measures can be found on the county's website, as well as the websites of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the CSU Extension.

Fairfax County health officials said they've seen a "large increase" in mosquitoes carrying the virus.

However, the season isn't over yet, and the number of "vector" mosquitoes is increasing as the summer moves on, he said. But officials say to avoid false positives, which are common among such infections, a second sample will be sent to NIV in 10 days for a confirmation.

The health department operates a mosquito control program and checks traps set in the community to test for diseases like West Nile, Zika and St. Louis Encephalitis. But one person was infected a year ago and survived.in 2016, two people contracted the disease with one death.

Most people make a full recovery over weeks or months, officials said, but severe cases can lead to meningitis, paralysis and even death, according to experts.

People infected with West Nile virus may show no or very mild symptoms.

Those who are 60 years of age or older are at the greatest risk along with those who have medical conditions like cancer, diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease, and or who have received organ transplants.

Since mosquitoes are attracted to standing water, residents are also advised to clean or empty out items that may hold water such as old tires, buckets, planters, toys, birdbaths, flowerpots, tarps, trash containers, downspout extensions and other containers to stop mosquitoes from breeding on your property.
